Florida Writer Receives Awards

Florida native Robin Draper picked up five Excellence-in-Craft Awards at the Florida Outdoor Writers Association 2014 Awards banquet held in Crystal River on September 13. Draper is owner and publisher of AuthenticFlorida.com, a website devoted to “simple and delightful pleasures of Florida living,” and is also a contributing writer for several magazines and newspapers around the state.

Draper received two first place awards. One was for the article Adventures in the Dry Tortugas published in Harbor Style Magazine that chronicled a visit to the Dry Tortugas and Fort Jefferson National Park. The other was a video titled Shucking Oysters with Authentic Florida. The video is posted on YouTube. Another video, Florida’s ECHO Farms, received a third place award. It describes a unique farm operation based in Ft. Myers that trains global workers and farmers in sustainable, agricultural practices fulfilling a mission of “feeding the world, one farmer at a time!”

Two additional third place awards recognized Draper in the Magazine Short Feature and Magazine Feature categories. Cedar Key, A Florida Original was published in Edible Orlando and Spring into Summer - Keep Cool in Florida's Refreshing Springs was published in Harbor Style Magazine.

A panel of professionals from the Georgia Outdoor Writers Association judged more than 100 entries for this year’s awards.

The Florida Outdoor Writers Association was founded in 1946 making it one of the nation’s oldest and largest outdoor communicators’ organizations. The association is comprised of professional writers, photographers, fishing guides, TV/radio show hosts, hunting guides, conservationists and other outdoor enthusiasts including associate members from Convention and Visitors Bureaus and others in the tourism industry.

The Excellence in Communications Awards recognize the best efforts in fulfilling the organization’s mission “to heighten the education of all outdoor participants in the areas of conservation, safety, participation and environmental issues” through ever-improving communication.
