As a Floridian, I spend a lot of time in the sun, the water and outdoors.  While enjoying all the amenities of Florida living, my body often needs skin nourishment, sloughing off the old while nourishing the new.

To start the new year, I decided to create my own Authentic Florida body scrub. Exfoliating one's skin and replenishing it with a refreshing citrus scrub is a great step towards rejuvenating yourself for the new year. Try this easy body scrub that takes only minutes to make, using just a few ingredients. It costs very little to make. It also makes lovely homemade gifts for friends.

Once a week (or more) I use a body scrub after my full shower/bath using a spa hand mitt or loofah sponge, lightly applying and scrubbing the full body in a gentle, circular pattern.  Following the light scrub, I rinse off.  The smell of the fresh scrub makes your body feel renewed and ready for a terrific day.

Florida Body Scrubs

I make two kinds of body scrubs.  One is a white scrub using Epsom salts and fresh lemon, and the other is a sugar scrub using sugar and an orange.

Florida Lemon Body Scrub

Ingredients

  • 2 full cups of Epsom salt (found in any drug store and most grocery stores)
  • 2/3 cup of Sweet Almond Oil (found in bath shops or health food stores) or use an oil that is odorless (grape seed, jojoba are others)
  • 15-20 dashes of essential lemon oil (found in a bath shops or health food stores)
  • 1 lemon – zest the outside of the lemon with a hand zester (this is optional, but I like the fresh lemon smell)
  • 1 bowl for mixing
  • 1 plastic container that can be sealed

Directions:

  • Pour the Epsom salt in the bowl
  • Add the Almond Oil
  • Put the dashes of lemon oil in the mixture and mix all ingredients
  • Zest the lemon and lightly mix in
  • Put in the container(s)

Note:

  1. If you have any skin sensitivities (or have specific health conditions) I recommend you discuss with a health professional which oils might be better for your body (if at all).  I like Almond oil.  But there are others.
  2. Also, your shower/bath will get oily from the scrub, so be careful to clean up the area to avoid any falls.
  3. If you have any open wounds or sores, be careful of using citrus, as it could have a mild sting.
  4. I don’t recommend using cooking oils for this recipe (vegetable oils).  It is recommended you use "cold pressed" oils.

Florida Orange Body Scrub or Grapefruit Body Scrub

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of white granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of light brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup of Sweet Almond Oil (found in bath shops or health food stores) or use an oil that is odorless (grape seed, jojoba)
  • 15-20 dashes of Essential Orange Oil or Grapefruit Oil (found in bath shops or health food stores)
  • 1 orange – zest ½ the orange (or grapefruit), or more (this is optional, but I like the fresh citrus smell)
  • 1 bowl for mixing
  • 1 plastic container that can be sealed

Note: It will not have a "sticky" consistency but will be a bit more "chunkier" than the Epson salt mixture.

Directions:

  • Pour the white and brown sugars in the bowl
  • Add the Almond Oil
  • Put the dashes of orange oil (or grapefruit) in the mixture and mix all ingredients
  • Zest the orange (or grapefruit) and lightly mix in
  • Put in the container(s)

Enjoy these wonderful homemade scrubs and enjoy the new you!   You can customize your very own concoction using fresh ingredients and essential oils. Enjoy experimenting with the recipes to create the perfect recipe for your new treat.
